About Vanitha Society

Vanitha ('woman' in Malayalam) Society, formed by a group of sex workers in Kozhikode district in northern Kerala. Registered in 2000, Vanitha Society took over from the Centre for Social Research and Development (CSRD), in Kozhikode, which had initiated a very successful program for HIV/AIDS prevention among sex workers in 1997. The CSRD's Partnership for Sexual Health (PSH) project - which had the Kerala State AIDS Control Society (KSACS) and the State Management Agency (SMA) providing management assistance - was the first program aimed at sex workers in Kerala. The project is funded by NACO.

The sexual health intervention programme among sex workers was initiated by the Kerala State AIDS Cell eight years back, and managed by an NGO (Non- Governmental Organisation) during the initial four years. As an offshoot of this intervention programme a CBO (Community Based Organisation) was registered and it took over the sexual health intervention programme.
In Kerala, this is the first project that is managed by primary stakeholders directly for themselves. This model has already completed three phases and is now the Vanitha Society is proposing an intervention project for another fifteen months with a reasonable budget, as part of the fourth phase of implementation.
The proposal is based on annual review conducted by an external evaluator and from the lessons learned during the earlier intervention phase. The fourth phase of the implementation looks to secure ultimate empowerment of the stakeholders for taking over the entire responsibilities of sexual health intervention as well as the other developmental programmes for the CBO members.
